The best of Ford's pickup truck lineup, the incredible F-150 can thrive in almost any environment, and it’s taking things up to a new level with the F-150 Lightning Switchgear. This Ford Performance demonstration vehicle, which was named for both its off-road and on-road prowess, features 37-inch tires, a carbon fiber exterior, 100% electric power, and much more.
The F-150 Lightning Switchgear Demonstrator was created in cooperation with RTR vehicles. The 2016 F-150 RTR Ultimate Fun-Haver project vehicle served as inspiration for the design of the F-150 Lightning Switchgear. The truck was built with intense off-road upgrades to let the F-150 Lightning explore uncharted territory.
The F-150 Lightning Switchgear is joining other veterans of the Ford Performance Demonstrator program, including The Mustang Mach-E 1400, the Mustang CobraJet 1400, the F-100 Eluminator, and the SuperVan 4.0 and 4.2. These vehicles are exceptional demonstrations of what an electric vehicle can truly accomplish, and Ford's engineering and design teams use them as the ultimate playground to push the envelope of what they can achieve and to expand the possibilities for electric vehicles of the future.
There are plenty of features to distinguish the F-150 Lightning Switchgear from the truck's base model, starting with a wider track for enhanced off-road stability, and increased ground clearance and suspension travel. The F-150 Lightning Switchgear's suspension system, which improves the truck's approach and departure angles, includes special front and rear bumpers along with FOX 3-inch diameter internal bypass shock absorbers. Additionally, the Switchgear has multilink independent suspension at the rear with coil-over shocks, a stabilizer bar, and custom control arms, plus a special independent double-wishbone suspension up front.
This truck has steel-fabricated rock rails and a front skid plate, as well as carbon composite front fenders, bed sides, and a rear bumper cover that make it ready for even the harshest off-road terrain. In order to manage suspension and wheel travel, limit straps are also incorporated into the truck’s design, along with NITTO Ridge Grappler 37x12.5R18 tires, and a pursuit rack that holds two spare wheels/tires.
Beginning on January 25 in Johnson Valley, California, the renowned off-road racing competition King of the Hammers will feature the F-150 Lightning Switchgear's live debut for the general audience.
