Ford recently revealed that, for the seventh consecutive year, the Ford Mustang – which celebrates its 58th birthday on Easter – is the world’s best-selling sports coupe. This fact was discovered by Ford when analyzing registration data from S&P Global Mobility.
The Mustang continues to dominate the sales bracket for 2021 with the 5.0-liter V8 performance, Mustang Mach 1, and the track-tested Mustang Shelby GT500, the best-performing street-legal Ford and most innovative Mustang to date.
“When enthusiasts around the world get into a Mustang, they unlock that feeling of freedom and experience the open road,” said Kumar Galhotra, president, Ford Blue. “That feeling, along with iconic design, awesome powertrains and a passionate global community all contribute to making Mustang a sales leader for the seventh year in a row.”
While the Mustang sells to customers around the world, the U.S. still is still responsible for 76 percent of the coupe’s global sales, though the Mustang saw strong growth in a number of places including New Zealand (up 54.3 percent), Brazil (37.3 percent), and South Korea (16.6 percent). For those who wanted a Mustang of their own, customers' retail orders nearly doubled in 2021 compared to the year prior.
Bigger and better things are coming for the long-standing Ford Mustang, as the next-generation S650 model will allegedly launch in 2023 for the 2024 model year. That model will represent more of an evolution for Ford’s pony car than a revolution, the next-gen Mustang won’t be getting any sort of all-wheel drive configuration, though it may be offered with two distinct hybrid powertrain options.
The new Mustang Mach-E also had a successful 2021 as one of the best-selling vehicles at Ford. In addition to a great first full-year of sales, the Mustang Mach-E achieved trophy-case worth of press awards, including the lauded North American Utility Vehicle of the Year honor, Car and Driver’s 2021 EV of the Year, 2021 Wards 10 Best award and a 2022 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award. Mustang Mach-E was also recently named a finalist for the 2022 World Car of the Year.
