It’s the most stressful time of the year now that winter weather driving is here. Take a deep breath and make sure your vehicle is prepared with Dunphy Ford’s tips and reminders! Make sure your vehicle is ready for the snow from your tires to your windshield, and while you’re on the go, make sure packed the necessary cargo.

Tires Mean Traction

Whether you have a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle, your tires are always the most important feature to gaining traction on slick roads. Before you venture out this winter, make sure your tires are properly inflated and have an appropriate amount of tread. As the cold sets in, our tires tend to lose pressure. For every 10 degree drop Fahrenheit, your tires can lose 1PSI. If they are not inflated properly, your tires will not gain the necessary traction for winter travel. Tires that are balding will also lack the appropriate traction on slippery surfaces. Make sure your tires have the necessary tread, or consider swapping out your all-season tires for snow tires if you regularly travel on windy roads and steep hills.

See the Road Ahead

It’s also important to see the road ahead as you’re driving amidst a snow storm. Windshield wiper blades should be replaced about once a year for optimal visibility when in use. The type of windshield wiper blade you buy also impacts how well you see as some are designed to handle snow and ice better than others. Make sure you’re prepared with the appropriate blades to see while driving in any storm.

Often times, are summer road trips lead to nicked or cracked windshields from busy highways bustling with tractor trailers and other large vehicles. If your windshield is cracked, make sure to replace it before the cold sets in. As temperatures drop significantly, the cold can settle in the crack causing your whole windshield to crack and further limiting your ability to see.

Pack an Emergency Kit

You never know what awaits on the road ahead, especially traveling in the winter when inclement weather begins. Be prepared for no matter where you end up with a self-prepared emergency kit. Be sure to keep ready-to-eat snacks, a blanket, and an extra set of clothes in your in case you get stranded on a closed highway. For instances where your vehicle may get stuck, be sure to keep an abrasive substance, such as kitty litter, on hand, and if possible, a small shovel. It’s also important to keep items such as an ice scraper, jumper cables, and a flashlight on hand for any situation that may arise.
