The redesigned 2018 Ford Expedition has been awarded the best possible crash test rating by the U.S. government, underscoring the safety of Ford’s full-size SUV.
The Expedition was given a five-star crash rating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program, which is the highest possible score a vehicle can earn.
According to Ford, the Expedition is the only vehicle in its segment to get an “Overall Vehicle Score” of five stars. The company attributes the Expedition's improved performance to weight savings and the use of high-quality metals in the vehicle’s body.
“Expedition’s improved performance is powered by an average weight savings of up to 325 pounds through the use of high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy in the body, which lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity for enhanced stability and driving dynamics,” Ford said in a statement.
Ford also praised the Expedition’s dual seat belt pyrotechnic pretensioners which help keep passengers in place during crashes.
The Ford Expedition chief program engineer, Andrew Kernahan, said safety was one of the major priorities of Ford while designing the updated Expedition.
“As a father of four and longtime Expedition owner, safety was a top priority when engineering the entirely new Expedition,” he said. “We are proud of the many features Expedition offers today that help keep our customers safe on the road.”
The Expedition also features an abundance of technological components to increase safety, including cross-traffic alert, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams and enhanced active park assist. The vehicle also features side-impact airbags, dual-stage front airbags, Ford’s Safety Canopy System and three-point seatbelts at every seat.
