A new year signals the start of new things. Many people make changes in the new year, as they try to better themselves. Many new things are coming Ford’s way, but one big change the company is making is the location of a pair of its development teams. Ford’s electric vehicle and autonomous vehicle development teams are picking up and heading to Detroit.
It is fitting that the company’s future technologies are being developed in the city where it got its start. The company has had little in the way of development or manufacturing in the city for quite some time. With these two development teams being transferred to the city, a strong Ford presence is returning. The teams are setting up shop in the Corktown neighborhood, and there will be over 200 Ford employees serving as a part of the teams.
Jim Hackett, Ford’s president and CEO was among strong supporters of the move, saying, “This move and our exciting Dearborn campus transformation are important steps as we move toward our aspiration to become the world’s most trusted mobility company – designing smart vehicles for a smart world.”
Detroit is the perfect location for Ford to set up shop when developing these technologies. In such condensed urban areas, there are concerns about the future of mobility. To remedy concerns of pollution, Ford is focusing on electric vehicles. Additionally, self-driving vehicles will likely have their places in cities in the near future. Ford being in Detroit, and being able to actively test both technologies, is a strong pairing.
