In keeping with the company’s goal to be much more than an automaker, Ford has unveiled a new piece of advanced technology in the form of a revolutionary trucker hat. The hat, which is built to look like a standard baseball cap, is state-of-the-art and can even save a trucker’s life.
Ford has called the hat the Alert Cap and the SafeCap. The cap is outfitted with sensors and a gyroscope that enable it to monitor the trucker’s movements. The cap’s primary function is to prevent accidents caused by drivers being too tired to drive or dozing off behind the wheel. If the cap senses that a driver is succumbing to sleep or is showing signs of dozing off, it emits a noise, while also vibrating and lighting up.
Ford decided to test the hat with truck drivers, specifically from Brazil. Drivers who make their living behind the wheel are at risk for possible accidents due to fatigue. Long hours and a quiet road can be a dangerous combination. Think of all the times that you’ve nearly fallen asleep at your desk! Truck drivers can feel the same way, especially when driving long hours.
Trucking is very widespread in Brazil, however, the job itself is considered hazardous. Over 10% of Brazil’s lorry drivers have been in accidents within the last two years. This is a pretty significant statistic. Ford hopes that the Alert Cap will help to lower this percentage in the coming years, for both Brazil and in other countries around the world.
