That is a lot to digest but with the recent developments in the field of GPS, autonomous driving, and automobile technology, it comes as no surprise.

Technology is changing the way we look at cars these days. If you look at the dashboard of the car, you will notice the significant changes that it has gone through over the years. Today, the cars are faster, better, and safer all thanks to technology.

Now if we could just get rid of ISIS we would be much better off. Moreover, the fuel efficiency has increased over the years which is fabulous considering taxes continue to rise as well as health care costs which was not supposed to happen but that is another topic.

A study conducted by ABI Research found out that around 62 percent of all cars manufactured in the US will have telematics pre-installed in the vehicle. The study was conducted for the year 2016. So what is telematics? It is a technology that enables GPS system, WiFi technology, hands free calling and usage of certain mobile apps, and automatic driving assistance.

Area of focus

Most of the automobile technology that is being developed and worked on is focusing on three key areas:

  • Passenger safety that deals with the safety of the driver and passengers traveling in the car
  • How your car functions, runs, and operates using a set of technology
  • Convenience and luxury that can be provided to the driver and the passengers inside the car

The engines that power the vehicle are now lighter yet more powerful than the previous generations. These more powerful and lighter engines are also able to provide better fuel efficiency than previous generation of cars. There is a new technology called start-stop which makes it possible by reducing the average consumption of gas and fuel emissions by turning the car's engine off when it is parked in the traffic and not moving forward.

If you live in Chicago or near some train tracks you may know all about that!

The moment the driver of the car removes his foot from the brakes, the engine is turned on again. Since your air conditioner and heater are also connected with the engine, the engine will start automatically when the sensors in your car detect a change in the climate that is unfavorable or different from what the driver has set. Well, for those in Phoenix in the summer time, this means the engine may as well just remain on.

Most people in America that want to be comfortable use the A/C in the summer time. Sweating while sitting in your car is not that much fun. So the car engine will have to work a little harder in the summer time which is nothing to be surprised about.

Sensors and monitoring

Gone are the days when you had to check oil, water, and coolant manually. Intelligent sensors coupled with mechanical functions have made it easy for the drivers to understand when the engine is over-heating, when there is a need to change oil and coolant or when to pour in more water. Even the tire pressure is now being monitored by the system so you do not have to worry about losing gas money because of low pressure tires.

A lot of cars now offer the feature of parallel parking which means that you do not have to miss another parking spot ever again. Parallel parking can be a tricky situation and many drivers used to give up on it anyways but not anymore.

It is amazing that in how many different ways, automobile technology has made our lives easier and more comfortable. The same is also true in case of passenger safety which has seen so much innovation in the last decade alone. Whether it is airbags, braking mechanism or adaptive cruise control, vehicles are safer than ever before.
