The Ford Edge is above Kuga and being promoted as an upscale or a premium model. Most buyers are going for the Sports or Titanium models.
Interior
Ford has used a liberal amount of soft materials inside the cabin giving it a very comfy look and feel. However that is not the main selling point, the main selling point is that Ford has implemented a new noise control feature which will use speaker technology to make sure that your car is extremely quiet when you are driving around in it.
Now your children will truly sleep like babies. Or your pets. If you do not have any of those, no worries, you can drive around without even your neighbors knowing you are coming and going. There are many advantages to being quiet.
Ford claims that the new speaker technology will help not only kill the engine noise, but also other elements such as horns, wind blowing, and road roars that one is so accustomed to. Hopefully even loud, obnoxious motorcycles that are allowed to wake up half the neighborhood.
You can easily travel in this car for 7 to 8 hours without feeling disoriented. It is comfortable and suitable for longer journeys. It seems that Ford is now aiming for developing cars that are more efficient, and which are designed for the global audience rather than cars that are made for a specific region or country.
Now you can drive from Northern, CA to Southern, CA or from North Florida to South Florida much more comfortably.
Engine
Despite the massive size and weight of the car, the Ford Edge is claimed to have a pickup of 9.9 seconds for the 0-62 mph speed run which is very impressive. The 2.0 TDCi engine delivers 178 bhp of power and comes mated with a 6 speed manual gearbox. If you are looking for more power, there is another that offers 207 bhp and comes with automatic transmission.
The new Ford Edge is actually longer than Land Rover Discovery and Ford has installed big, comfortable, squashy seats. There is no seven seater option which means there is plenty of space for you to store your stuff and the seating arrangement is roomier. If you have a dog, plenty of room for him or her to lie down.
The Ford Edge comes with a lot technology pre-installed and then, there are some gadgets that are optional. For example, you can get self-parking assist installed as an addon. It comes pre-installed with Ford's Sync 2 touch screen system and all the models comes with AWD (All Wheel Drive), but none of the models have a switchable mode.
Verdict
It seems that Ford has successfully built a big SUV for the budget of a medium SUV. This going to work in favor of Ford because the big SUV market is fiercely competitive and there are many companies with different models on display vying for the customer's attention.
Unfortunately these big SUVs are also very expensive and this is where the Ford Edge shines. Ford is a family name in the US with a very strong base of dealers and several attractive offers for the customers.
With the Edge, Ford has delivered an SUV that delivers on the promise of a large family SUV, but on a budget. When you compare the features, specs, and other options that this SUV offers with some of the other SUVs currently available in the market, you will notice that the Edge is ready to face the competition head on. Ford has successfully struck a balance here.
The strategy is good and one that will work for Ford. The Edge is currently doing good business and customers are leaving positive reviews which is always a fruitful sign. Ford is already working on the next version of the Edge, and it will be interesting to see how that goes.
