The Ford Edge is a very popular car with sales of more than 100,000 per month on the other side of the Atlantic. Just think how many would sell if Europe’s economies were not dismal and their taxes were not so high? In regards to 100,000 a month, that is a very impressive number. It has been 10 years since the Edge went on sale in the US and it has been a runaway hit ever since.

Features

It is to be noted over here that the Edge comes with only 5 seats compared to some of its competitors that come with 7 seats, but those cars essentially cater to a different market segment. This means a bigger family on a tighter budget. Ford has decided to launch a newer version of the Edge with a brand new engine. The 4x4 offers sterling value and Ford is trying to win over families that are looking for a family car that can essentially serve all kinds of purposes.

The maximum number of Edge buyers usually goes for the top two trim levels which are Titanium and Sports trim respectively. The Edge is offered in automatic and manual modes, but customers prefer to go for the automatic which is 210 bhp diesel trim level instead of the 180 bhp manual model. The Ford Edge is available in a variety of colors and the company is using electric spice metallic gold as a promotional color for the marketing campaign.

Many people though would prefer a silver of blue type color though when they actually getting ready to sign their name on the check.

The color combination will wary slightly here and there as you go one trim above the next. For example, the Titanium version of the Edge comes with chrome work around the grille, window as well as roof rails, but if you go for the Sport version, all this will be black. Well people like black too! Though black in Arizona and in the southwest overall does not make too much sense. You better make sure that A/C works real well in Arizona in the summer time if you choose black.

Many people in the hotter states prefer to stay away from black for obvious reasons.

Specifications

There are two engines available in the market at the moment; both come with 2 liter turbo engine but one offers 180 bhp while the other offers 210 bhp, as already stated. Both cars come with fabulous noise cancellation technology and sound insulation which means that you will not hear that much engine noise either inside or outside the cabin. This just makes the ride more harmonious.

The 180 bhp version claims a speed of 0-60 mph in 9.9 seconds with a top speed of 124 mph while the 210 bhp boasts 9.4 seconds for the same with a top speed of 131 mph. The reason behind these numbers is that both versions weigh around 2 tons. This car is not lightweight.

The Edge comes with four wheel drive but the automobile giant is said to be working on a two wheel drive version as well. As far as the average is considered, the 180 bhp version offers an average of 48.7 mpg while the 210 bhp version offers mileage of around 47.9 mpg (this is a diesel engine – diesel gas prices do cost a little more though than normal gas prices). If you consider the weight of the Edge, these mileage figures are pretty impressive.

The suspension of the car works well and therefore offers a quality ride. There is very little body roll in the car and it handles corners with acumen. The steering wheel on the Titanium and Zetec version offers a strong self-centering force that makes it feel very stable on the highway.

The Edge is a 4x4 and measures at 5.25 yards or 4.8 meters in length. There is room for everybody. It does not have the ground clearance of a full size truck and you may not want to pull a larger boat with this car the Edge works for many people. What sells high in Europe though may not sell as much in America. No one expects F-150 type numbers.
