This March, Ford was one of 200 finalists for Fast Company’s 2017 World Changing Ideas Awards. The award honors cutting-edge companies, products, and designs that provide solutions to both global and local problems.
Ford was honored for its invention of On-the-Go H20. Designed by a group of Ford engineers, On-the-Go H20 utilizes cars as a source of water. The product collects condensation from the vehicle’s air conditioner, filters it, and pumps the water into a faucet located within the car. From there, any occupant in the vehicle can enjoy a glass of clean and refreshing water.
Doug Martin, one of the Ford engineers responsible for On-the-Go H20, developed the idea after seeing a billboard in Peru that advertised converting moisture from the air into drinking water. Running off that idea, Martin wondered if the same concept could be applied to automobiles.
Vehicles, especially air conditioning units, waste a decent amount of water. Martin’s invention seeks to recover, reuse, and recycle the water to people in remote areas of the world. One day, Ford hopes to use On-the-Go H20 to give water access to people where water is not readily available and abundant. Martin, his fellow engineers, and FMC seek to continue developing groundbreaking products like On-the-Go H20 to help make the world a better place in the future.
