Ford Unveils New SUV For Chinese Market

Ford Motor Company revealed a new midsize SUV in early August that will be available in China to answer the nation’s increasing demand for utilities: the Ford Territory.

With the release of the Ford Territory, Ford hopes to provide an affordable, technologically-advanced vehicle to a segment that is rapidly growing in the East Asian country — new vehicle buyers in emerging cities.

The vehicle is a result of a joint collaboration between Ford and Jiangling Motors Corporation. The collaboration allowed Ford to use JMC’s extensive knowledge of Chinese vehicle consumers to develop a vehicle that fits the tastes and preferences of Chinese car buyers, Ford says.

“JMC provided insights into Chinese customers’ lifestyles and product preferences, while the Ford team leveraged its global expertise to design, engineer, and test Territory at Ford’s testing centers in Nanjing, China and Melbourne, Australia,” Ford said in a statement. The company said that the vehicle will be made at JMC’s Xiao Lan plant, adding that the plant meets Ford’s global manufacturing standards.

There will be three powertrain options when the vehicle goes on sale in 2019: a fuel-efficient gasoline engine, a 48V mild hybrid with Miller-Cycle technology and a plug-in hybrid option. The Territory also features Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assist technologies, giving drivers a safe, efficient and environmentally-friendly midsize SUV. The Ford-tuned suspension in the Territory is designed to provide comfort to customers, according to the company, which was likely a major focus since Ford is targeted the vehicle toward urban drivers.

JMC Chairman Qiu Tiangao touted the collaboration between the two automakers. He said the collaboration will help meet the needs of Chinese consumers.

“The new Ford Territory shows what can be achieved when two global companies collaborate closely, bringing their respective strengths to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of Chinese consumers,” he said.

Peter Fleet, the chairman and CEO of Ford China, agreed. He said the collaboration helps Ford expand their influence in China to better serve customers.

“The Territory is a breakthrough for Ford in China in terms of our ability to successfully compete with Chinese automakers for millions of customers that we do not currently serve,” Fleet said. “Territory is a key proof point for how we will grow in China. We brought Territory to market with speed, high quality and cost efficiency. It will be affordable for young families and new buyers across China, not just the coastal mega-cities. And the technology will delight customers.”
