Ford Launches ‘Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC’

Ford Motor Company has announced the formation of a new organization to spearhead the company’s automated vehicle initiatives. The new organization, Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC, will oversee the company’s research, development and business strategies pertaining to automated vehicles.

Ford announced the move in late-July statement, detailing the responsibilities of the new organization. Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC will be in charge of accelerating Ford’s AV business as Ford hopes to capitalize on current market opportunities.

Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC will be headed by Sherif Marakby, a Ford vice president who currently heads the company’s autonomous vehicles and electrification department. Marakby will serve as the CEO of Ford Autonomous LLC and report to a board of directors chaired by Ford’s executive vice president and president of mobility, Marcy Klevorn.

Under the leadership of Marakby, the organization will focus on the following:

  • Self-driving systems integration

  • AV research and advanced engineering

  • AV transportation-as-a-service network development

  • User experience

  • Business strategy

  • Business development teams

The LLC will be based at Ford’s Corktown campus in Detroit, which is expected to have a heavy focus on the future of transportation, according to the company.

The LLC will hold Ford’s ownership stake in Argo AI, a Pittsburgh-based partner of the company with a focus on vehicle automation. With Ford expecting to invest approximately $4 billion dollars into AV research and development through 2023, $1 billion of it will go to Argo AI.

Ford President and CEO Jim Hackett said the consolidation and creation of Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC will help put Ford in the best position possible as the automotive industry evolves.

“Ford has made tremendous progress across the self driving value chain – from technology development to business model innovation to user experience,” Hackett said. “Now is the right time to consolidate our autonomous driving platform into one team to best position the business for the opportunities ahead.”
